Dear Friends,
It is such very sad news for all of us to learn that Ray Wu is no longer
with us. None of us will ever forget what a gentleman and scholar Ray has
been, and what kindness and understanding his wonderful friendship has
brought to us. In addition I suggest that we remember something else as
well.
In 1970, at the 8th International Congress of Biochemistry in Switzerland,
I had the good fortune of witnessing Ray's historical report on the first
successful sequencing of DNA using the single stranded cohesive ends of
lamda as template for E. coli DNA polymerse. As well, he described a
procedure for sequencing double-stranded DNA. Over the subsequent three
decades the scientific world followed his trail, bringing in the Genomic
Age of biomedical sciences. However, no textbook seems to remember this.
So let's make sure that our students, and our students'students know and
remember this, a remarkable accomplishment by a great scientist and
friend. A copy of Ray's report on pp. 166-167 of the Abstracts of this
meeting held on 3-9 September 1970, unavailable in many libraries, is
hereby attached for your records.
With best wishes,
